The range of thermal devices is larger than ever, and specifications often look very similar. Sensor resolution, NETD, objective-lens size, magnification, laser rangefinder and a long list of additional features can quickly make the choice more complicated.

That is why choosing thermal optics should not come down to the single biggest number in the specification sheet.

Here are six things worth considering before you buy.

1. Sensor resolution

One of the first specifications you will see is the thermal-sensor resolution – for example 256 × 192, 384 × 288 or 640 × 512.

A higher resolution generally provides more detail and gives you more usable image quality when applying digital magnification.

For that reason, devices with 640 × 512 sensors are particularly interesting for demanding users and for observation at longer distances.

However, resolution alone does not determine thermal-image quality.

2. NETD – one of the most important specifications

NETD indicates how small a temperature difference the thermal sensor can distinguish.

Put simply:

a lower NETD value generally means greater thermal sensitivity.

This is especially important when the temperature difference between game, vegetation and the surrounding environment is small.

That is why modern premium devices such as current Falcon MEDUSA and ATN ThOR models combine high-resolution sensors with very low NETD values.

When comparing devices, do not look only at the “640” label – consider the complete sensor specification.

3. The objective lens and base magnification must suit the terrain

A larger objective lens is not automatically the better choice.

Hunting in open terrain and observing at longer distances place different demands on a device than using it in woodland and at shorter ranges.

The starting, or base, magnification is equally important.

Higher magnification can be an advantage at distance, but it also reduces the field of view.

One of the most important questions before buying is therefore:

At what distances will you use the device most often?

The answer often narrows the choice down to a few suitable models very quickly.

4. Digital zoom is not the same as optical magnification

High digital-zoom figures look impressive in a specification table, but it is important to understand how they work.

With digital magnification, the device enlarges a portion of the image that the thermal sensor has already captured. The more digital magnification you apply, the less original image information remains available for display.

This makes a good sensor and strong native resolution even more important.

Do not base your purchase decision only on the maximum digital-zoom figure.

5. Laser rangefinder – do you need LRF?

More and more modern thermal devices are available with an integrated laser rangefinder.

LRF allows you to measure the distance to the observed object quickly without using a separate device.

This can be very useful because judging distance at night is often more difficult than during daylight.

Models such as selected Falcon MEDUSA and ATN ThOR LRF devices integrate the rangefinder directly into the thermal system.

Do you need it?

If you mainly use a thermal device for shorter-range observation, perhaps not.

If you often observe at longer distances and want an accurate range reading, LRF can be one of the most useful features.

6. Do not forget the practical details

Technical specifications matter, but a thermal device ultimately has to suit the way you actually use it.

Before buying, check:

  • battery life
  • battery type and availability
  • device weight and dimensions
  • ergonomics and button layout
  • weather resistance
  • external power options
  • photo and video recording
  • internal storage
  • Wi-Fi and app support, if those features matter to you.

These are exactly the details that can make two devices with very similar headline specifications feel very different in everyday use.

Falcon, ATN or another model?

With thermal optics, there is no single manufacturer or model that is best for every user.

Falcon, ATN and other manufacturers offer different combinations of sensors, objective lenses, magnification, rangefinders and additional features.

It is therefore more important to find a device that matches your terrain, distances, use case and budget than to look for a universal winner based on one specification.

Thermal optics can be a serious investment, so it is worth making the right choice from the start.
